Ingrown toenails can be very painful and can commonly become infected and swollen once the nail has penetrated the skin. Improper nail cutting, chipped toenails, fleshy toes, narrow shoes and/or highly curved toenails are common causes for ingrown toenails. In order to get relief and clear the infection, the nail spike must be removed from the corner. Using antibiotic either orally or topically will only mask the infection. At the Mount Joy Foot Clinic, this process is done without significant pain. If your toenails frequently become ingrown, then your Chiropodist can perform a procedure to remove the entire nail or a small portion of the nail and apply a chemical to avoid the nail from re-growing. Home surgery of your ingrown nails should be avoided as this can lead to the infection spreading.
If you are suffering from a painful ingrown toenail, schedule an appointment to have your feet assessed and treated in a safe and clean environment using sterilized instruments.
