Toenail Fungus

toenail fungus

Nail Fungus infections occur when fungi enter through a small injury in your nail, then grow and spread in the warm, moist environment found inside your socks and shoes. You may have toenail fungus if present with swelling, yellowing, thickening or crumbling of the nail, streaks or spots down the side of the nail, and sometimes complete loss of the nail. Toenail colour can vary from brown or yellow to white.

How Toenail fungus begins

You might have picked up toenail fungus if your feet were exposed at public gyms, shower stalls or swimming pools, pedicure salons, etc. If you are active, sweat and wear shoes that don’t breathe well and socks that fail to keep your feet dry, then you’re generally at a higher risk of developing toenail fungus.

Other risk factors include not drying the feet thoroughly after showering, excessive perspiration and a weakened immune system. If you have diabetes or are on medication that lowers your immune response, fungal infections can be an unfortunate problem or side effect. In these cases, you should see a Chiropodist or Podiatrist to help trim and treat the disease.

Preventing Toenail fungus

Maintain good foot hygiene, including drying your feet after showers, take caution when going for a pedicure. Also, routinely wear clean socks, control excessive sweating and wear clean, dry socks and shoes. Various over-the-counter remedies are available, including tea tree oil, Vick’s vapour rub, olive oil, etc. If you fail to see any improvement by making these lifestyle changes, consult with our Chiropodist to find the best way to treat your infection.
