Plaster of Paris Casting
Plaster casting creates a 3D, non-weight-bearing mold of your child’s foot. We hold the foot in a neutral position while the plaster sets, which records every contour and arch profile. That mold is the basis for orthotics that fit precisely.
UCBL orthotics for more significant concerns
The UCBL (University of California Biomechanics Laboratory) orthotic is a firm device with a deep heel cup and high side walls. It’s sometimes prescribed for children whose feet need more structural support than a softer insole provides. We’ll recommend the right device after your child’s assessment.
- Heel and arch control: holds the heel securely and limits the foot rolling inward (excessive pronation)
- Suited to larger concerns: such as severe flexible flat feet, instability, or in-toeing
- Joint support: stabilizes the subtalar and midtarsal joints to reduce strain during running and play
Cost and insurance
$575 per pair. This includes:
- Casting (3D laser scan or plaster of Paris)
- One pair of custom orthotics
- Your dispensing appointment
Many extended health plans cover some or all of the cost, usually when a claim includes a prescription, a documented biomechanical assessment, and proof of casting. We provide all of these documents.
Custom orthotics are not covered by OHIP. Please check your plan’s requirements before your appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to commonly asked questions about pediatric custom orthotics
If your child often complains of aching feet or tired legs, an assessment can find the cause and whether orthotics might help. Persistent pain should be checked, not assumed to be part of growing.
Usually around age 3–4, once they’re walking independently. Every child develops differently, and we only recommend orthotics when a persistent biomechanical issue affects posture or comfort.
Plan to reassess every 12–18 months. Feet grow fast, so orthotics need adjusting or replacing to keep fitting properly.
They can feel unfamiliar. Build up wearing time gradually, as your clinician instructs. If discomfort doesn’t settle or symptoms worsen, book a review.
Not necessarily. Flexible flat feet are common in children, and painless ones usually don’t need treatment. We base our recommendation on symptoms and assessment, not arch appearance alone.
