What Are Orthopedic Shoes?

Orthopedic shoes, also called therapeutic footwear, are made to support and protect the structure of your foot. They usually have a deeper and wider toe box, firmer heel support, and removable insoles that make room for custom orthotics.

We often recommend them for plantar fasciitis, diabetic foot problems, bunions, flat feet and arthritis. Once they’re fitted properly, you can wear them every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

You don’t need a prescription to buy orthopedic shoes, but most insurance plans need one before they’ll pay for them. Either way, we recommend an assessment. Our chiropodists examine your feet first, so you get a shoe that fits your needs, not just your size.

Many private extended health plans cover orthopedic footwear. Coverage rules vary from plan to plan, so we recommend asking your insurer if you need a pre-determination before your appointment.

Orthopedic shoes are not covered by OHIP. Many extended insurance providers may provide coverage for off-the-shelf, modified or custom made orthopedic shoes. At Mount Joy Foot Clinic & Orthotic Centre, we highly recommend submitting a pre-determination or estimate to your provider. Our registered chiropodists provide all the necessary insurance documents after completing your foot and ankle examination.

At Mount Joy Foot Clinic & Orthotic Centre, orthopedic shoe cost vary and start from $375 case fee (includes one pair of orthopedic shoes and your dispensing appointment).

Orthopedic shoes may help if you have foot pain, have diabetes, are recovering from a foot condition, or find regular shoes uncomfortable most of the time. Your chiropodist can tell you during your assessment whether therapeutic footwear is right for you.

We carry Orthofeet, Anodyne and Drew orthopedic shoes (Ros Hommerson styles are not included.) We do not stock shoes in the office, but will size you correctly with our samples. We handle all your footwear exchanges to get you the perfect fit.

If your shoes don’t feel right, let us know. Our chiropodists will check the fit and make sure they work with your feet and any custom orthotics you wear. Many fit problems can be fixed with simple in-office adjustments. If the shoes still don’t fit, we can exchange them for a different size within 14 days of dispensing, unworn outdoors and in their original condition and packaging.

Yes, and we often recommend it. Orthopedic shoes have deeper, removable insoles, so your custom orthotics fit properly without changing how the shoe is built.
