Kick Out the Itch: Your Guide to Understanding and Preventing Athlete’s Foot
Athlete’s foot is a common fungal skin infection that doesn’t affect athletes alone. If you find that your feet are itching, scaling, red or have formed small blisters, it’s possible that your suffering from athlete’s foot. For some people, the infection can spread between the toes and even into and under your nails.
Fungus? How did I get that?
Athlete’s foot can be picked up most commonly in public or shared areas such as dressing rooms, locker rooms and showers especially if you tend to walk barefoot in these areas. If you don’t thoroughly dry your feet after a shower or your feet sweat excessively and being trapped in socks and shoes (dark, humid environment) all day encourages the growth of fungus on our skin. Having Diabetes, a weakened immune system or a pre-existing fungal nail infection can also explain why some people may also develop an infection. Whatever the reason is for you having athlete’s foot, dealing with it quickly and appropriately is essential to your foot health.
Fighting back against Athlete’s foot.
Treating athlete’s foot is not complicated, but it does require dedication. What you need to do right away is keep shoes and socks clean and dry, wear moisture wicking socks (cotton or wool), maintain excellent foot hygiene (daily washing with soap and water) and dry your feet thoroughly including between the toes. In some cases, an off-the-shelf or prescription anti fungal spray or cream may be necessary.
