Plaster of Paris Casting

The Gold Standard in Precision Foot Orthotic Casting

Plaster of Paris casting is the gold standard of a true 3D, non-weight bearing mold of your foot. As the quick-setting plaster hardens, keep your foot in its natural neutral position. In this traditional process, each and every contour and arch profile is precisely documented. What you get is a very accurate picture of the structural alignment of your foot that forms the basis of custom orthotics that provide the best support and corrective balance.

VeriScan Podiatric 3D Laser Scanner

Precision Laser Scanning that Replicates Plaster of Paris Casting

The Veriscan Podiatric Scanner (VPS) employs red line-laser 3D-imaging to quickly and accurately capture a true-dimension digital cast of the human foot. The VeriScan can complete and process a scan in seven seconds and send it to the lab in another five seconds in tandem with Envisic’s software.

Cost and Insurance Coverage

Mount Joy Foot Clinic sells custom orthotics for $575 a pair. This includes a casting (3D laser scan or plaster of Paris), a pair of custom orthotics, and your dispensing visit. Many extended health plans will cover some or all of the cost, often when a claim includes a prescription, a documented biomechanical assessment, and proof of casting.

Custom orthotics are not covered by OHIP. We recommend you check your plan’s requirements ahead of your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Accommodative orthotics are custom-made shoe inserts designed to provide cushioning, support, and relief for various foot conditions by redistributing pressure and accommodating foot deformities.

People with conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, bunions, hammertoes, or other structural foot deformities often benefit from accommodative orthotics.

Accommodative orthotics primarily focus on comfort and pressure relief, while functional orthotics are designed to correct abnormal foot biomechanics and improve gait.

Many insurance plans cover accommodative orthotics if they are deemed medically necessary, especially for conditions like diabetes, but coverage varies by provider and policy. OHIP does not cover custom foot orthotics.

They are usually custom-made based on a mold or scan of your feet to ensure proper fit and pressure distribution, using soft, supportive materials.
